Are you open to visits or tours?
Yes, however, calling ahead will be the best option because there may not always be someone around during the day.
How long has your farm been in existence?
Unruh Pasture Fresh Poultry has been going for 11 years.
Please share a brief synopsis of the history of your farm.
This farm really started as a FFA project during high school and has continued on during college with family pitching in to take care of the animals during my college years. Now, after graduating, the business is starting to take off. We have always raised our chickens cage-free, grass fed and we have just been improving our methods and ideas throughout the years.
What animals do you raise?
As of now, we raise grass-fed broilers and layers.
All about the poultry
Which, if any, organic certification does your farm have? If none, do you use organic or conventional practices?
We do not have any organic certification, however we feed our chickens on spring and summer pasture grasses that have never been sprayed with any pesticides, weed killers, or fertilizers. This is considered a natural pasture.
Which chemicals (antibiotics, de-wormer, hormones, etc.) do you use? How often?
We do not use any antibiotics, de-wormer, or hormones during anything of the chicken’s life.
Describe the type of grazing system you employ. (Free range, cage free, pastured?)
Unruh Pasture Fresh Poultry uses the free range, grass-fed grazing system. We use portable shed that is surrounded with an electric netting fence that equals a little over one acre, and can be moved easily to any portion of the pasture. We do this on a bi-weekly basis. This allows the chickens to eat the most nutritious part of the plants. This way the chickens get fresh grasses without having to worry about predators.
When supplementing your feed, what type of feed do you use? Do you make an effort to avoid GMOs?
We currently make our own feed for the chickens with a grinding process, and we do use standard corn from the farmers co-op as of this moment. However, Unruh Pasture Fresh Poultry is looking to use GMO free corn and other grains in the future. We are currently looking at doing the whole process ourselves with planting and harvesting.
Do you feed your chickens vitamins?
We do not use any other supplements beside the vitamins and minerals we grind in the feed.
What would you like People’s Grocery Co-Op shoppers to know about your products? What sets you apart?
